Repsol Chairman, Antonio Brufau, accompanied by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, this morning visited the site of the Neighborhood of the Roman Forum in Cartagena, where he met the important advances that have occurred in the archaeological excavations and conservation work Repsol Foundation which funds amounting to more than four million.
These advances the conclusion, almost entirely, from the archaeological excavation of the eastern half of the building called the atrium and the streets that define the block of the first century where it is located.
BANQUET ROOM
The work has enabled a large room of approximately 82 m2 which was ruined after a fire in the building in the late third century.
The interior of this room, which could be initially dedicated to the celebration of ritual feasts, was infilled by debris from the collapse of the walls of the two floors.
The interdisciplinary work of archaeologists and restorers has restored the paintings that decorated the walls and walls that, over time, came to partition into smaller environments this initial room, both on the ground floor and the first floor.
In one of these environments has recovered an important part of pictorial composition which contained the god Apollo accompanied by the Muses, of which, so far, we are aware of three: Terpsichore, Calliope and Melpomene or Thalia.
The adaptation work carried out at the conclusion of the excavation allow visitors to follow the process of restoration of the paintings preserved in situ, that are undertaken today.
The banquet room connects to another of similar dimensions closing the building for its North side, where so far have been removed archaeological levels associated to the collapse of the upper floor.
With this intervention, have recovered the murals that decorate the walls and perimeter walls of the first floor-even in study-phase, which has an excellent state of preservation.
Similarly, from the perimeter walkway south of the Neighborhood of the Roman Forum can already see various rooms of the V century AD, they occupied the service area of the old building of facilities as part of its walls still standing, despite that had already been almost 500 years since its construction.
WALK THE ROAD ROMAN
The perimeter tour of the set comes complete with the ability to take a walk through the streets that define the block of the first century jobs that have recovered now conclude plotting two -cardo streets and walked decumano- whereby citizens of the time.
Along the route you can see the ruts (imprints) released the cars to travel on these streets, sewers, the facades of the surrounding buildings and roads of earlier times that allowed walking through the windlass in the third century and II BC
To make this journey accessible, has built a footbridge which replaces the volume of a section of the decumanus, where the original pavement is not retained.
These results have been achieved after digging archaeological methodology about 500 m3 of earth and regain some 1,200 boxes of archaeological materials, of which about 1,000 are fragments of wall paintings from the walls and partitions of the banquet rooms.
This is the first operation carried out in within the agreement with Repsol Foundation, which provides more than 4 million, and will aim to create an exhibition area in the noble part of the Roman city, with 4000 meters sq exposure.
This early intervention has had a budget of 574,720 euros and began implementation in January this year.
STATEMENTS OF MAYOR AND BRUFAU
After the visit, the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, has again publicly thank bet the Repsol Foundation, in the person of Antonio Brufau, for the recovery of a heritage that is one of the most important findings that there is Spain and conventirá the largest, with the support of Repsol and a serious and rigorous technical project archaeological urban promenade.
Meanwhile Brufau was pleased by the progress of work and stressed the quality and concentration of the remains, which makes this site unique.
The president of the oil has also referred to the historical bond with Repsol Cartagena, and the other reason for your visit to the City's participation as guest in forum New Murcia, where he plans to reflect on the energy sector.
To Brufau Cartagena is an ideal place to discuss energy, as it hosts the most modern refinery in Spain and one of the most important in Europe.

Finally, when asked by reporters, the mayor has sent his condolences to the family of à Isidoro Alvarez, president of the English Court, died yesterday.
The mayor has called it a unique personality and a great businessman, dump in your company and its workers.
Barreiro recalled that he had the opportunity to share several lunches with him in Madrid and one of the things I learned from him was going places unannounced, to see and understand how things really are, as he himself Alvarez.

INTERVENTIONS IN THE NEXT ROMAN FORUM
The following operation in the neighborhood of the Roman Forum will begin at the end of 2014 will aim recovery Shrine insula II annexed to the insula I, and adjacent road network and has a budget of 940,460 euros.
Intervention will follow the upper terrace of the forum (Capitol), a large terrace where you flip up rearing the temple was presiding forum of the colony, with a budget of 916,895 euros;
