DG Environment has initiated the timeframe of the European project LIFE Tetraclinis Europe, which aims to preserve, improve and expand the area of ​​forest called cypress Cartagena (articulata tetraclinis), located in the mountains of Cartagena and La Union and is listed as a 'priority habitat' at Community level as 'very rare' nationwide.
This habitat is characteristic of North Africa and in Murcia has its unique representation on the European continent.
Dispatched by mining mountains of Cartagena-La Union in an area less than 600 acres, of which about 30 percent were affected by recent fires.
The project includes activities such as pastoral leases, restoration of mining areas, prevention and combating the loss of genetic diversity, germplasm collection and forest reproduction, repair roads, grazing control and elimination of species alien species, among others.
Socio-economic impact assessment of the project and a program of public outreach and awareness on it, through technical seminars, conference attendance plant conservation, publications and the creation of a website is also contemplated, among other things .
The above project has a budget of 1,544,000 euros, of which the EU finances 68'98 percent.
The implementation period runs until July 2018 and has as partners with the University of Murcia, Cartagena City Council, the Sierra Minera Foundation and the Association of Southeast Naturalist.
