The graduate of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) María García Vigueras has been awarded by the Association of Engineers of Teleco (COIT) with Hispasat Award for the best doctoral thesis in new applications for communications satellites.
Vigueras García, 29 Murcia, read in October, 2012 in UPCT his thesis 'Analysis and design of leaky-waves antennas loaded hybrid frequency selective surfaces', which developed an innovative high performance antenna with high directivity , low profile and small size, especially suitable for long distance communication, such as those made by satellites.
The doctoral thesis of the graduate of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, led by Professor of the School of Teleco José Luis Gómez Tornero, and was awarded by the European Conference on Antennas and Propagation and earned for a postdoctoral researcher in Switzerland.
"I'm very happy," admits the young researcher, who is also "very happy" with the prize awarded by the National Association of telcos.
In Switzerland, García Vigueras research at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, a center of reference in European Telecommunications, a project of the company RUAG Space, dedicated to the manufacture of devices for space technology and satellites.
"Researching travel a lot"
The graduate of Maria Garcia Vigueras Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSIT), awarded for his thesis on antennas, developed his research career in Switzerland, where coordinates with Ruag Space factory in Sweden, forcing him to combine the French and English in their daily work.
Strengthening Language is not the only advantage of research abroad, so are allowed to travel.
His doctoral thesis led him to New York, Prague, Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds, and now travels frequently from Lausanne Switzerland to the Swedish Gothenburg.
- Tourism is an incentive to start a research career?
- At least for me, it was one of the reasons that led me to it.
I have traveled a lot since I started the thesis and I love that.
Undoubtedly, the research encourages visits to other countries.
- Has he served his research in UPCT for current performance in Switzerland?
- Of course, the knowledge I gained during the thesis have been key.
And they were instrumental in getting this job.
My current work of what I researched but now the challenge is to actually implement it in space communications.
At the same time, I open other lines of research.
- How is the formation of UPCT from an international reference center?
- Well, I now realize that not everywhere as good as in Cartagena Polytechnic training is provided.
I am an example of how well it works UPCT.
What I have achieved is due to the motivation of teachers and the energy transmitted.
It is a reward for the whole team, starting Gómez Tornero, the University as a whole and my family, who supported me a lot.
And it is also fair to remember that my research is always funded with public funds, without which it would not have been possible.
Public financing is now in doubt, making it difficult for new researchers succeed.
- Are you happy researching abroad?
- I'm thrilled.
At first I was sad to leave Murcia, but now I've discovered the Alps and skiing, and I love it.
