Works in Cartagena composting plant will reduce by 25 percent the waste input to landfill (05/06/2014)

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, presented today, on World Environment Day, the project of improvement and adaptation of classification processes and biological treatment of the wastewater treatment plant municipal solid waste Cartagena, which will reduce by 25 percent the waste input to landfill.

The performances in this treatment plant involving an investment of around € 6 million, and are being conducted in two phases, explained the owner of Agriculture and Water, adding that "although works that go unnoticed, have a fundamental result for improvement in the selection process and waste treatment, which will allow a more sustainable environment. "

The Ministry is working on the improvement and adaptation of regulations in all public treatment plants of municipal solid waste in the Region of Murcia, Cartagena like, but also in other municipalities such as Lorca, Ulea, Jumilla and Murcia.

"We want to get with the duties of recycling compliments on the horizon of the year 2020", which has raised the European Commission directives on this matter, Cerda said.

The project was presented today for MSW plant Cartagena has two specific purposes.

On the one hand, improve and adapt the processes of classification and biological treatment of the existing plant with the latest process technology, by installing equipment that will allow a high degree of automation and adaptation to new requirements process.

This will enable you to be prepared to meet 2020, by increasing the separation of fractions containing materials and substances that can still get a usable value, which increase and improve recovery rates.

Increased rates of material recovery

On the other hand, get lower volumes of these materials end up in landfills by 25 percent, extending their life time and eliminating the risk that inadequate treatment of these wastes may have on the environment.

This project has an investment of 4.1 million euros.

Expected recovery rates for the plant are 90 percent for steel, which now reaches 47 percent;

or 78-85 percent for plastic.

In the case of aluminum, the recovery rate will increase from 40 percent to 70-85 percent.

The paper and cardboard carton spend 40-60 percent and 75 percent, respectively.

The agriculture minister also referred to the recently concluded action in the first phase, which involved the execution of works to improve the fermentation and maturation of compost by the covering of the treatment area, with an investment 1.7 million euros.

This action will significantly reduce leachate generation in the current processes of fermentation and maturation of compost;

and ensure both maturation times and process conditions that are most suitable for the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases.

Both actions are funded 80 percent by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union and 20 percent equity of the Community.

Cerdá remarked that "in addition to the efforts required from public awareness in improving the separation of waste generated in the home, still other actions separation and classification to be required to recover the containers can have tour the use, from the selective ability of the plants themselves treatment ".
