The Minister of Education, Culture and Universities, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, today participated, along with Secretary of State for Culture, Jose Maria Lassalle, and the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, at the inauguration of the new module 'Ocean Navigation' Museum Underwater Archaeology-Arqua, wherein the treasure of the frigate Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes is shown.
In addition to the important claim that the sample means treasure, part of a permanent exhibition of Arqua, delves into the shipbuilding era, navigation routes and the need for protection of underwater cultural heritage against depredations as that done by the company with the frigate sunk Odyseey the October 5, 1804 at the Battle of Cape Santa Maria.
Pedro Antonio Sánchez highlighted "the informative and educational materials developed for this new module Arqua makes attractive and interesting knowledge of our culture and history to all audiences. Moreover, it allows even closer museum spaces to the public and makes the region, and more specifically to Cartagena, a cultural attraction at the national level. "
This new exhibition installation will consist of four parts.
The first illustrates the new ocean trade routes were established with the American continent and subsequently with Asia, driven by the Crown of Castile and Portugal from the late fifteenth century and consolidated during the Modern Age.
It includes an interactive world map indicating the major shipping routes.
The second deals with shipbuilding and explains the consequences of the proliferation of new routes to the Americas, Africa and India, which bring the improvement of naval engineering and the emergence of new ships: the galleon and the frigate.
Shipbuilding, nautical instruments, as well as the manning of ships, form the elements studied in this section, incorporating elements such as information and educational reproductions of olfactory navigation instruments or resources in relation to the goods transported.
As main application a cross section of the frigate Mercedes include full scale.
The third section is dedicated to the history of 'Our Lady of Mercy' in two large cabinets, since its construction, the trips made and the particulars of the battle that led to its collapse.
The second case focuses on the study of numismatic coins recovered and shows the recovery process, research and conservation of these goods.
Besides showing in both currencies showcases and other collections before and after restoration, a video about the journey of the ship and an interactive on their physical characteristics are incorporated.
Finally, the fourth section explains in an audiovisual support the need to protect the underwater treasures.
The opening of this new module ARQUA also attended the Government Delegate, Joaquín Bascuñana, the head of Maritime Command Action, Salvador María Delgado, and the museum director, Ivan Negeruela admiral.
