The mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, received today in his office at the Town Hall to the new president of the Association for the Treatment of People with Down Syndrome (ASSIDO) in Cartagena, Juan Aparicio Carrasco, who has given his commitment to seek municipal land to build a house where members of the association can live as independently as possible.
The meeting was also attended by the Councillor for Social Care, Antonio Calderon.
Whenever we ask the mayor anything she gives us that and more, assured Carrasco, in fact, not only is committed to find some land for our project of residence but also has given us to do training and practice working in different areas of the City.
The project, still under preparation, which Juan Carrasco has spoken to the mayor, arises from the concern of relatives of people with down syndrome are reaching an age for their future, some may live in sheltered accommodation, but not others, and they could have qualified for this miniresidencia, with a capacity for twelve people, which also work as occupational centers where they can be included.
Another project Assido, although longer term, is to manage an existing residence, which have in mind a center in Quarry municipal ownership.
As the new president of Assido, the objective of the association, composed of one hundred families, is to normalize the lives of people with Down syndrome, and it will aim its efforts, to which there is also a group home or learning, which is already operating in Cartagena, where l os users are rotated every two or three months and are taught to be independent to live alone if they so choose.
