The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) promote actions related to rural architecture and agronomy to promote ecotourism in the West Zone of Cartagena.
This is reflected in a partnership agreement signed today, Wednesday, by the Rector, Jose Antonio Franco and the president of the Institution of Land Stewardship Conservation Garbancillo Tallante (ECUGA), Joan Butler.
Under this agreement UPCT four centers participating in the conservation program garbancillo Tallante, which is being developed by European funds.
Schools of Architecture, Agricultural, Tourism and the Faculty of Business will drive actions for the promotion and conservation of natural, architectural and cultural heritage of the West Zone of Cartagena, says Juan José Martínez, Professor of Crop UPCT and secretary of the Institution of Custody.
The ECUGA has launched this year's "Maintenance of traditional agricultural activities and development of ecotourism for conservation garbancillo Tallante (Astragalus nitidiflorus)" project in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Environment.
This program will enhance traditional elements West Zone with great architectural importance, such as mills or watchtowers and other natural and cultural resources, as traditional crop varieties highly adapted to semi-arid environments.
Joan Butler and Secretary of ECUGA explained that sustainable development of this area of ​​Cartagena settle population and allow the return of traditional crops, thus maintaining the habitat necessary for the conservation of not only the garbancillo Tallante, Critically endangered, but also many local varieties of cultivated species and native breeds in our region that can have a new opportunity in a market of responsible consumption and committed to the conservation of our natural resources.
Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering coordinates the promotion of the knowledge of LIFE + project 'Conservation of Astragalus nitidiflorus-Garbancillo Tallante-in potential habitat in the Region of Murcia' of which they are beneficiaries associated DG Environment and the city of Cartagena.
The European program began in 2012 and end in 2016 and provides aid to 1,200,000 euros, to which must be added 30,000 euros provided by the Biodiversity Foundation.
