The Archaeological Museum pays tribute Cartagena San Pedro Martin, who discovered the Roman Theatre and responsible for much of the archaeological excavations carried out in the city.

San Pedro Martin pioneered the defense and recovery of assets of the region and, especially, of Cartagena, work was a change of great importance to the port city.

The dean of the College of Architects of the Region, Antonio García Herrero, stressed the importance of their work throughout the Region, its thoroughness and excellent legacy that his family recently donated to the Archives to enjoy all Murcia, and which is composed of more than two hundred cases, with construction projects, archaeological reports, photographs and original plans of tens of interventions. "

CAREER

San Pedro Martín studied architecture at the School of Madrid, where he graduated in 1953 and had studied under Leopoldo Torres Balbás, former curator of the Alhambra and one of the pioneers of modern monumental restoration in Spain.

After passing the exams as an architect of the Ministry of Finance, in early 1954 he scored his first and only destination in Cartagena.

Fate never gave up despite having the opportunity to return to his hometown Valladolid.

Soon he began collaborating with the Department of Fine Arts as assistant architect of the Seventh District Service National Artistic Patrimony, and later with the emerging autonomous region, in different projects of recovery of assets held in the Region as well as the city of Cartagena, where he was curator of the local archaeological excavations and archaeological director of the municipal museum for decades.

In 1997 he received the award for professional work awarded by the College of Architects of Murcia, in recognition of his dedication to research, restoration, conservation and protection of the historical heritage of the region, an organization that has dedicated a recent tribute and exhibition retrospective.

The wealth of documentary, witness the meticulous work of Pedro St. Martin in all his projects, is of enormous value to know the cultural history of our region.
