The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and Salvage, an agency under the Ministry of Development, today signed a cooperation agreement in R + D + i which includes the joint use of equipment, including underwater vehicles for research rescue and pollution.
The rector of the UPCT Jose Antonio Franco, and director of Salvage, Juan Luis Pedrosa, signed the agreement on board the rescue ship Clara Campoamor, in the port of Cartagena, during a ceremony also attended by the Minister of Education, Universities and Employment, Pedro Antonio Sánchez.
The agreement enables researchers to share the technical UPCT Maritime Rescue teams are there in Underwater Vehicles Laboratory of the Polytechnic, and in turn make use of facilities, vessels, and means that the State agency has in Cartagena.
The UPCT has an autonomous underwater vehicle, operated by remote control, which can cut search times during a rescue and has sensors to detect pollutants.
The agreement will make more frequent joint exercises of both entities with high-tech equipment, as already done for the operation of the Laboratory of Underwater Vehicles UPCT.
Collaboration is also extended to the training field, with the possibility of joint courses, seminars and conferences, and internships in Salvage by students of the Polytechnic.
