The Segura basin (CHS) has invested 807,000 euros in the Rambla de Peñas Blancas, in the town of Cartagena, with the aim of improving the drainage capacity of the channel, the environment and recover environmentally conditioning for recreational use by citizens .
The president of the CHS, Michelangelo Ródenas, and the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, today toured to monitor the result of the tasks in a daily area frequented by many residents who take advantage of the comprehensive improvement of the environment for walking and sports.
The work, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has been developed on a stretch of 9.4 kilometers from the deputation of Corona to Los Barreros, crossing Marfagones Mills upstream from the intersection with Rambla Benipila , one of the main channels of the municipality of Cartagena.
Works stabilization and erosion control of the Rambla de Peñas Blancas who executed the basin organization have included the removal of accumulated debris and replant the area with native species.
To contribute to the social integration of the promenade, the CHS has adequate pedestrian path for about 500 meters in length between the two ends of the village of Molino Marfagones, in which elements are placed to practice outdoor exercise.
Halting the erosion and improve drainage capacity
The boardwalk suffered a process of slope instability and inert deposit that reduced drainage capacity and posed a danger if avenues, both by the collapse of banks such as trawling obstacles.
Its layout is highly sinuous and meandering form huge almost 100 meters wide, combined with sections where the channel is not very deep.
For stabilization of slopes and erosion brake were placed breakwaters (reinforcements stones) and gabions (similar to the jetties, but with a mesh containment), while non-depressed areas of environmental importance have filled with the material itself the promenade.
Cleaning of waste in the bed and the slope of the Rambla de Peñas Blancas has primarily manual mode, although in areas close to urban centers, where the deposits are concentrated spill areas, the use of machinery has been necessary for the huge amount of accumulated debris.
In these areas have been placed informational and ban the dumping of garbage and debris panels to raise awareness of the benefits of having a clean promenade and to the condition of the runway last.
Environmental restoration and revegetation have been undertaken selectively and with native species, for which the pre-invasive and non-native vegetation was removed.
To improve drainage are provided several areas of natural ponds and lagoons advantage ponds, forming water accumulates there instead of other places undesirable health issues.
