The Maritime Rescue Centre in Cartagena coordinated assistance to 240 people during 2013 (21/01/2014)

The Rescue Coordination Centre (CCS) in Cartagena, under the Ministry of Development, coordinated the rescue, support or search for 240 persons attended the 76 maritime activities in 2013, compared to 310 103 persons attended maritime activities in 2012 .

These figures represent a decrease of 22.5% in the number of people involved in such interventions about 2012 and a decrease of 26.2% in the number of performances.

This 68 attended CCS related Salvage, 7 January maritime safety and protection of the marine environment emergencies.

The total number of vessels involved totaled 61, of which 41 were for emergencies related to boats, 8 to merchant ships and fishing 3.

The remaining 9 cases were associated with other types of ships and floating structures.

The proceedings which have not been involved vessels correspond to different types of medical assistance to people in distress: falls to the sea, cliff rescue, etc..

Over the past year were attended from Cartagena 5 related to illegal immigration, with a total of 48 people involved emergencies.

Moreover, from the CCS in Cartagena 19,546 vessels were monitored at the inputs and outputs port.

Performances throughout Spain

Salvage has 20 Rescue Coordination Centers throughout the Spanish coast covering maritime rescue zone that the International Maritime Organization has assigned to Spain.

The sea surface rescue in Spain is 1.5 million km ², equivalent to three times the national territory.

The 20 centers coordinated the rescue, support or search for 13,090 people (an average of 36 per day) in the maritime activities 5,121 (14 day average) served throughout Spain during 2013.

These figures represent an upgrade on the 2012 1% in the number of actions and 10% in the number of people involved in such interventions.

Most of the answers to these interventions in 2013 was related to saving lives at sea, namely 4,067 performances; 679 other interventions to ensure safety at sea and 375 relating to the protection of the marine environment actions.

Vessels involved

The total number of vessels involved totaled 3,789 compared to 3,449 in 2012.

Regarding the type of vessels, recreational staged 1,927 cases (over 50%), 667 fish and 452 merchant vessels.

The remaining 743 cases were related to other types of ships and floating structures.

Irregular immigration

In proceedings relating to illegal immigration, Salvage coordinated 303 emergency, with 4,813 people assisted.

Of these, the media Maritime Rescue rescued a total of 2,253 people, who were taken to Spanish ports.

The other people were rescued by Moroccan media and transferred to Morocco, especially in the vicinity of the Strait.

Control of maritime traffic

Moreover, the total number of 20 centers controlled by the Maritime Rescue vessels has been 305,552, of which 140,672 are identified vessels passing through the devices Finisterre Traffic Separation, rate and Cabo de Gata and Canary East and West.

The other 164,880 vessels were monitored inputs / outputs of the Spanish ports.
