Photovoltaic solar energy is always profitable from the environmental point of view, whether the energy balance is evaluated as CO2 emissions avoided.
There is always a more favorable environment in the case of photovoltaic result when compared with other energy alternatives.
This is evident in the findings of the doctoral thesis defended at the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT) by Lucía Serrano, PhD renewable energy program.
The research demonstrates the profitability of environmental and energy terms as "always generates more energy than it took to produce it," says the researcher.
In fact, research has measured the energy that is generating a photovoltaic system installed on the campus of Espinardo University of Murcia and in two years it has become profitable investment from the energy point of view.
The thesis photovoltaics commitment to combat climate change and the greenhouse effect.
The research paper, "Computing tools applied to the analysis of performance and sustainability of photovoltaic systems", is run by Antonio Urbina, coordinator of the Master in Energy and co-directed by Judith A.
Cherni professor at Imperial College London.
The Region of Murcia is one of Spain points where more solar energy reaches.
This location is ideal for installing this type of energy.
Recommendations to combat climate change and the greenhouse effect, is the integration of the panels in buildings.
A photovoltaic generator at ground occupies an area which can not be used for other purposes, and also requires a structure that also generates impact.
The thesis demonstrates that integration is more profitable from the point of view of energy and environmental balance.
Additionally, PhD indicates that the environmental impact of solar panels change much depending on where manufactured and where they are installed.
This decision may involve up to 20 times to avoid tons of C02 into the atmosphere if the optimal combination between the places of manufacture and installation is chosen, but it has shown that the impact of the installation site is much higher.
The thesis includes work that has seen 16 countries, of which Brazil appears as the ideal place to make solar panels, due to the energy mix, it is very clean.
The correct place to install solar panels is South Africa, due to the combination: high solar irradiance and dirty energy mix.
Similar situation would Cuba, and parts of China and the United States.
The thesis has been integrated into the research projects "Hybrid Optoelectronic and Photovoltaic Devices for Renewable Energy" and "Fabrication and characterization of organic solar cells: spin-coating a continuous processing", led by Professor Antonio Urbina and funded Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
These projects have focused on new photovoltaic technologies of low economic cost based on organic materials, through which can be seen in addition to the environmental benefit thesis defended at the current proposal, and can achieve profitability with electricity Solar in European regions with higher irradiance, such as Murcia.
