An investigation of the UPCT analyze reconciliation practices in the field of engineering (13/11/2013)

A research project of the University of Cartagena analyze the possibilities of reconciliation of work and family life to achieve greater gender equality in the field of engineering.

The project 'Reconciliation as an instrument of social inclusion of women engineer', to be directed by Maria Eugenia Vidal Sanchez, professor of the Faculty of Sciences UPCT Company and awarded by the Foundation for his research Alares conciliation has been presented Wednesday in the chapel of the Chancellor neogothic.

The project is developed through the program of grants for conducting research related to women's studies and gender, the Institute for Women (autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality) and seeks to analyze how measures to reconcile work and family in the workplace can contribute to equal career opportunities for men and women in the field of engineering, a sector with low female presence.

"The fact of working in a University, where most of our students are in engineering, has been one of the reasons we chose this study population" said Maria Eugenia Sanchez.

"According to previous research, the percentage of women that exists in the sector affects the development and implementation of measures of conciliation by companies. In this sense, the engineering sector is very masculine industry and this has caused the level of reconciliation of work and family life is well below the levels achieved in other sectors. "

And while it is true that the scenario is the same for men engineers, it is also true that in our society the level of responsibility of men is lower and this causes women to suffer greater work overload and find it more difficult to balance work with their personal and family life, "says Maria Eugenia Sanchez.

"The results achieved by the project team in previous investigations further demonstrate that support workers in their reconciliation benefits companies" adds Maria Eugenia Sanchez.

However, she states "gender equality in this area will be achieved when these measures are implemented and are used by both men and women."
