The remains of pepper can be used to great advantage as nutrients in broccoli and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, as research has proven the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), which has now been made known during the reading of a doctoral thesis.
The leaves, stems, branches, roots and fruits of no commercial value generated by the intensive production of pepper, present in 95% of the area of ​​Campo de Cartagena, have "great potential as soil amendment in agricultural production and dedicated to representing a source of organic matter and nutrients "for broccoli, as stated in the thesis of the researcher Jennifer Moreno Cornejo, led by doctors from the School of Agriculture of Angel Face and Raul UPCT Zornoza, Management research group, Use and Recovery of Soil and Water (GARSA).
Capsicum plant debris caused in the broccoli cultivars tested, an increased availability of nitrogen and improving soil properties, increasing the microbial biomass and enzyme activities, details thesis.
"This alternative use of crop residues as organic amendment seems adequate to solve the current problems existing best suited for handling this waste, while an advantage for farmers to be a source of organic matter and nutrients," summarizes the Professor Faz.
