The research paper "Bimi, a new hybrid of broccoli with high nutritional value," presented by Javier Navarro Rico, doctoral student at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), has won a prize for best paper on Health Food and VII Iberian Congress of Agro-and Horticultural Science.
This scientific meeting in Madrid brought together international researchers to address how to innovate and produce for the future.
The research compares the conventional broccoli and the new natural hybrid, called bimi.
According to researchers at the School of Agronomy and Plant Biotechnology Institute of the vegetable known for its healthy properties as it has a high content of bioactive compounds such as anticancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, capable of preventing the development of cardiovascular diseases.
The bimi is grown in the region of Murcia but for now, just sold in Spain.
The authors of the study are Ginés B.
Martínez Hernández Gómez Perla Di Marco, Javier Navarro Rico, Javier Bernabéu, Francisco Artes Hernandez, Mariano Otto and Francis Artes, postharvest researchers and Refrigeration Group and the Institute of Plant Biotechnology UPCT.
The work has been supported Sakata Seeds Company Ibérica.
The director of the Institute of Plant Biotechnology, Francisco Artes, notes that the prize won reveals the importance of the subject and the quality of the research.
The work done in this regard by the research group have led to numerous publications in international scientific journals of high impact index.
