810 gulls least the last four years in the skies of Cartagena (19/08/2013)

Successive campaigns control prevent colonization of these specimens and in which the cooperation of citizens has been crucial to locate this year 97 nests in different roofs of buildings and hillside

The cooperation of citizens has allowed the location of 96 nests, 137 eggs and 61 chicks legged gulls variety within the campaign against the spread of this species in various parts of the city, has been developing the city of Cartagena during the recent months.

During this campaign, which began last March, have controlled 211 points on the roofs of buildings and hills, close to the port area.

Many of these points correspond to those that had located the presence of these birds in the past and others that have been drawing the citizens themselves, through phone calls.

In total we have increased eightfold since inspected locations were launched this type of campaign in 2008.

Treatment also increased eggs, unused by the punch, and has descended as a result the number of chicks removed relative to other years.

Through these campaigns, coordinated by the Department of Health and run by two biologists, has avoided in the past four years the birth of 500 and a gull chicks were removed from the nest and another 310 chicks born.

In total about 810 gulls least that would excessively conolizado Cartagena skies, especially in areas adjacent to the port and others inside the Eixample.

The places where nests, eggs and chicks were removed were the Military Arsenal, the hills of San Jose, Despenaperros, Park Towers, Military and Campus Residence at the Sea Wall and the Palace of Justice.

The yellow-legged gull is a copy that is well adapted to the environment and that in recent years has colonized inland areas of the coast.

This is a noisy species, which lives from food scraps and garbage and discomfort generated by their droppings.

During the nesting season, from March to June, can be aggressive.
