Agricultural researchers patent a method for converting pig manure into fertilizer and irrigation water (02/07/2013)

Researchers from the School of Agricultural Engineering have patented a method for successfully reusing pig manure as fertilizer and irrigation water.

This is an on-demand technology designed for the farmer to make a sustainable management of pig manure, says the researcher responsible for the group Management, Use and Recovery of Soil and Water, Angel Face.

The new system has been developed in a doctoral thesis, defended by Ana Maria Caballero and directed by Angel Face and Raul Zornoza, a researcher who has received the award for outstanding young scientist of the year within the soil science division of the European Geosciences Union ,

Demonstrate that the new technology is profitable recycling slurry liquids formed by animal urine, in agricultural crops.

Its use is particularly useful in rainfed crops, although it is possible for recovery as soil improvement in horticultural crops.

The teacher points out that these residues Faz pose a problem for small and medium livestock by land degradation that generates storage, which is usually done in mass.

The slurry pits but channeled out from the feedlot, accumulate in rafts waterproofed.

"These can cause risks to the basement," says the professor.

The slurry treatment proposed thesis becomes an alternative solution to farmers who have no land on which to put the waste of pigs.

Until now, the most natural way to eliminate farm slurry is incorporated directly into the soil, according to the needs of the crop.

But is incorporated in proportion to prevent contamination of the soil.

This option is not useful to farmers who have no land on which to deposit the waste.

The experimental study trials have been conducted since 2008 in the Integrated Training Center Lorca Agricultural Experiences.

Here are installed underground in pits slurry to which various treatments have been applied aeration thickened sludge.

It also created a raft wetlands and microalgae storage, among other actions.
