The 75% of students from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena use any mobile device to study, according to data collected by a study conducted by Professor Fernando A.
Lopez Hernandez of the Department of Quantitative Methods and Computer Science Faculty of Business and Maria Magdalena Silva Perez, manager of Aul @ Virtual UPCT.
The study 'Determinants of acceptance of mobile technology use in learning for university students', supported by a teaching innovation project of the Faculty of Business, was based on data collected in a survey of students of all UPCT titers during the months of December 2012 and January 2013, the data were examined in the context of Model Technology Acceptance (TAM) and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT).
We used logistic regression techniques to determine the impact of various factors, perceived usefulness, ease of use, and social factors on the effective use of this approach to learning.
According to the study, 65% of college students use the mobile device to check his notes in the Aul @ Virtual UPCT, 61% use it to search the Internet, 42% use the mobile device to download and view documents another 27% watch videos on Youtube and only 19% use it to organize your calendar and write notes.
The 91% of students use smartphones compared to other mobile devices like tablets, iPod or iBoook.
The 33.82% of students who use a mobile device to study prefer to do since college, 36.50% from home.
A smaller percentage, the 14.36% it does when traveling and others from the street.
"The 25% of students have tablet and considered a useful tool to study," said Fernando Lopez, co-author of the statistical work.
The study results are consistent with the statistics of access to LMS platform UPCT that ever growing fruit of intensive activity performed by students and teachers according to the number of visits received in recent years, where access the Virtual Classroom using Mobile technology has gone from 665 visits in the year 2009-226634 in 2012.
However, despite the high number of students who use these devices, a high percentage said that academics do not encourage the use of mobile devices for the development of learning activities.
Currently, the study is in the design phase of a learning environment compatible with mobile technology that integrates teaching practice, participation and monitoring of students with the use of technology based on m-learning.
In this second phase embedded materials are used in virtual teaching platform Aul @ Virtual UPCT.
"Virtual platforms are increasingly prominent role in learning and going to redesign the way that teachers need to teach and students to learn," says co-author Maria Silva.
"The results of the analysis of the data not only reveal the determinants of the use and acceptance of mobile technology for the study, but that show how students are taking the initiative to innovate new ways of studying.
The use of mobile devices is strongly rooted in their behavior patterns and also incorporate new forms of learning, "adds Professor Lopez.
This study, unique of its kind in a Spanish university, can help improve the use of technology LMS (learning management system).
