Cartagena has today received a visit from a large group of members of the Committee on Culture of the Congress of Deputies, who have accepted the invitation of the mayor, Pilar Barreiro, to see first hand the historical and cultural heritage of the city, starting his tour at the Palace Hall, to then do stop at the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, ARQUA, home of Mercedes treasure.
At the head of the Commission was its president, Juan Manuel Albendea, and PP spokesmen, Juan de Dios Ruano and PSOE, José Andrés Torres, in the same, which have agreed on two issues, first, in Cartagena recognize the wealth of heritage features and value that will be useful in their parliamentary work and, secondly, the need to improve the Spanish laws on heritage, focusing on the distinction between land and underwater heritage, and adapt to international law.
In ARQUA have attended also to the explanations of the museum director, Xavier Nieto on the work being carried out to expose the treasure of jobs ranging Mercedes following the schedule and that have become attractive to tourists, with respect to the same time last year, we noted an increase of around 17 percent in the number of visits, Nieto assured.
With the promise of giving a major boost to ARQUA, the Commission has continued its journey through the city, accompanied by the Mayor and the Councillor for Culture, Rosario Montero, in which no shortage visits to two of the greatest archeological landmarks arouse interest, such as the Roman Theatre and the District of Roman Forum, among others.
