The Department of Infrastructure, through Municipal Service of Parks and Gardens, has launched proceedings against the red palm weevil that attacks the palms of the city, including the removal of stumps of individuals that had to be cut, mainly , by condition of this beetle, palms to replace hull in several places.
In addition, crews will soon begin to implement, on a group of historical urban palms, one based fitofortificante a fungus called Beauveria bassiana, which is harmless to plants, animals and people, but acts specifically against the red palm weevil ( Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).
This application has been tried with some success in the city, through a pilot project conducted in 2011 by a group of researchers from Ramon Margaleff Institute, University of Alicante, through a collaboration agreement with the City.
Sources at the Department of Infrastructure have explained that it is a complementary treatment, within the program of Integrated Pest Control, and according to the guidelines established by the Regional Plant Protection Service.
The aim, according to the sources, is to safeguard the unique palm copies of our green areas and prevent new attacks that will be planted, so that, just around a few years, have their own defense system , in which the inoculating the insect fungus acts by contact.
Apart from these natural treatments, not discarded others based on chemical control by applying pesticides authorized, or physical fighting, trapping and surgeries, in which the city of Cartagena was a pioneer.
