The mayor, Pilar Barreiro, has addressed a letter to Defence Minister Peter Morenés offering Cartagena to host delivering the battle flag of strategic protection to ship Juan Carlos I.
The letter comes after having knowledge of the media of the change in the original plans foresaw this issue in the city of Barcelona.
Barreiro believes it would be a great honor to deliver the battle flag to the flagship of the Spanish Armada, and a great privilege for the city to host the ceremony at the port with the solemnity it deserves that spot.
For the mayor of Cartagena, a city when delivering the flag to a unit of our army is doing a tribute to its members, but also, through them, to all members of our Armed Forces. They have entrusted our defense and they honor us every day, inside and outside our borders, taking a job that sometimes involves personal risk, added the mayor.
These reasons, Pilar Barreiro continued, should be apparent to everyone, but more so in cities like Cartagena, seaport and historically linked to the Navy.
The Juan Carlos I, the largest vessel ever had our Navy, where Spanish is needed, and its crew, as they always have the Spanish sailors, will go to the missions assigned to them to defend our security.
For that reason, the mayor concluded, any institution that has the opportunity to provide you with your battle flag will only advance the appreciation they deserve crew with their work.
