A new step towards the enhancement of the Underwater Cultural Heritage
Following the court order issued last February by the court in Tampa, which called on the company Odyssey Marine Exploration to the Spanish return of cultural property of the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes that were still in possession of the company, a team of experts from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport yesterday moved to Gibraltar to collect some of these archaeological collections.
In total, have been delivered to the Spanish cultural 53.
These collections provide an added cultural value to the numismatic.
Among the objects are elements of an important historical, social or anthropological fragments of ceramic vessels and glass lenses that retain their glassy material, textile bags, purses, metal buckles, bullets of lead and gold cufflinks decorated, plus other personal belongings.
These collections speak of a new history, daily life on board the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, a new narrative that enriches the vision of our common heritage and the need for its conservation and preservation, taking a further step in protection of underwater cultural heritage.
The success of the operation has been possible thanks to the intense collaboration, cooperation and good communication between different agencies and institutions involved, both domestically and internationally.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport expected in the near future, to recover the rest of the material remaining in Gibraltar.
For immediate needs of conservation of this delicate archaeological, cultural property has been transferred to ARQUA-National Museum of Underwater Archaeology Cartagena to start preventive conservation work.
