The Ministry of Culture, through the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE) has begun the restoration of the ancient cathedral of Santa María de Cartagena to ensure their conservation.
The budget for this work is of 252,200 euros and their duration is five months.
The temple, which retains only covers the south side presents problems of stability and the finish is damaged.
There are also some vertical cracks in the walls and in the keys of the arches, and other damage that favor the entry of water.
For this reason, the intervention focuses on the consolidation of building elements, especially the walls and vaults that make the cover of several of the chapels.
It also restored the cupolas, ledges and walls, which will include surface cleaning.
Other tasks under the whole building are the repair of the terraces and steps between the decks, running leaded in areas exposed to rain and proper disposal of water.
Known as the Old Cathedral of Cartagena, this church is located near the Roman Theatre and has been closed since the Civil War, when it was partially destroyed by bombing.
Construction began in the late thirteenth century in late Romanesque style, noticeable even in some walls and pillars, despite numerous subsequent amendments.
Range of Cathedral lost a few years, the diocese moved to Murcia after the Christian reconquest of the city.
A late nineteenth century, after ruining a part of the apse and the north transept was restored and rebuilt with a historicist approach to it by its current neo-Romanesque appearance.
