The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, has announced that the Ministry of Culture has published in the Official Gazette of the State a resolution of the Board of Hiring the department by making public the conclusion of the contract for the works of the phase I of the intervention on the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.
Tovar González recalled that last May were tendered works, aimed at improving the use of the building, to promote conservation and retrieve items that allow a correct reading of historical and architectural features.

The project, which will run the Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture through the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain (EICP), part of an analysis of the condition of the property.
Among the most important conditions presented by the Cathedral are on the covers and moisture damage to interior and exterior plants.
The intervention will focus on the restoration of damaged items by the above conditions by using traditional materials and techniques.
The performance should also include the upgrade of facilities related to public visit the building, improving accessibility to it and worship and with the recovery of liturgical use of the three chapels are preserved.
The Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Mary, known as the Old Cathedral of Cartagena, is located in the historic city center.
Its construction began in the late thirteenth century, subsequently amended on numerous occasions.
The most significant reforms took place in the early twentieth century, after ruining part of the apse and the north transept, rebuilt in neo-Romanesque style then.
The temple, which has three naves with chapels and a bell tower was partially destroyed after the Civil War, which covers lost and relevant works of art located inside.
Since 1958 there have been at the site of the cathedral, archaeological excavations have documented Roman remains, as well as the various phases of construction of the temple.
Also the architectural elements of the cathedral have been occasional emergency interventions designed to safeguard the property.
