The fight against the red palm weevil will be a new effective, cheap and without environmental impact (16/06/2011)

The fight against the red palm weevil, which has already affected some 200 specimens of palms in Cartagena this year, remains a priority for the conservation of this landscape element.

The Department of Infrastructure of the City of Cartagena, through its Parks and Gardens service has proven this morning a new system to combat the scourge, which acts as an injection of insecticide into the palm itself, spreading the sap and kill weevil when biting the leaves.

It also acts as the palm is already infected and is even effective against the larvae.

The new tool, which has already been used successfully in several municipalities of Alicante, was tested in some 70 palm trees in the plaza of the Heroes of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba, and in total, will be implemented in 200 copies of the parks public ownership of Cartagena. Alfredo Ahumada, the company's commercial director Provefe (Marketing of phytosanitary products and agricultural consultancy) has developed a tool, explained that l or more of the system is its low environmental impact and that the insecticide has no contact the environment, such as spraying, but deposits it directly into the tree.

COST 30 EUROS FOR PALM

Besides the effectiveness and cleaning is a cost-effective treatment.

The insecticide application costs 30 euros per tree, while the demolition of an infected copy costs around 200 euros.

In addition to the company in charge, several technicians, contractors and grantees for the maintenance of public gardens have gone to trial the new system to eradicate the plague of red palm weevil.

On the application form, make a hole in the trunk of the palm by introducing a pickaxe is left sealed so that the palm is not interpreted as a wound.

Then insert the insecticide with a syringe inside the pick, so it reaches the flow of sap.

From there it flows through the leaves, poisoning and killing weevils or larvae that bite to eat.

After 30 or 40 days the pick is reopened to inject more insecticide and recap.

In this sense, as explained by Ahumada, is less harmful to the palm than other injection systems that need a new piercing every time they put a new dose.

SPECIALLY DESIGN FOR PUBLIC PARKS

The treatment is specially designed for public parks, allowing that while tourists are walking around the city were getting treatment in the palm. There is no environmental or aesthetic impact as it is visible only a small plug in the trunk , explained Ahumada, and is even thought to ward off potential vandals because it is installed in the upper parts of the tree.

The red palm weevil has a devastating effect on the palms, particularly the species inflicting himself on Canary Island date palm, which abounds in the area of release. A female lays 300 to 400 eggs and is capable of traveling up to 5 km in flight to find a palm tree where to start.

The mild temperatures favor the spread and can be given between 2 and 3 generations of red palm weevil year.
