The mayor of Cartagena and the Minister of Public Works presented this morning the pilot project in the region that is installed in the Paseo Alfonso XIII for Lines 1, 4 and 7, and will benefit over two million passengers a year
The City of Cartagena, in collaboration with the Autonomous Region, has launched a new system to give priority to buses passing through the traffic lights in the city. Cartagena is the first city of the Region in implementing this system EBUS ( Express bus) whose main objective is to regulate the intensity of traffic and reduce journey times on local bus and the waiting time at stops.
The Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, the Minister of Public Works, José Ballesta, and Council Member of Infrastructure, José Vicente Albaladejo, presented this morning, this pilot project in a demonstration bus tour Paseo Alfonso XII, which has installed the first points prioritization.
José Ballesta has congratulated the City of Cartagena to be at the forefront of technological applications that will benefit, in the first way in which they have installed the prioritizing points to some 2,500,000 passengers this year.
The functioning of EBUS technology is the use of a detector, installed a few meters before the traffic light, which recognizes the passage of a bus and then regulates the traffic to give priority over other vehicles.
When the bus approaches the light signal crossing at the traffic light signals the driver that the lights are going to put green in a matter of seconds, so the driver has to slow down but not stopped.
The direct benefit of this new application developed by the Public Transport Authority (EFA) is to prevent the arrest of the bus and thus to promote circulation, and waiting times at bus stops to be reduced to 20 percent.
The system works successfully in other cities of our country and Elche, and meets the goal of improving the service quality of public transport, since it allows greater reliability, reduced waiting times at bus stops and greater comfort travelers to avoid arrest or sudden bursts of bus, explained the Minister of Public Works, José Ballesta.
In addition, this initiative is to promote public transport and, thirdly, it will be an important element of sustainability because it will reduce fuel consumption, which will make public transport more environmentally friendly, sustainable and eco-efficient, according to indicated the director.
In addition to urban mobility, the system will optimize the fuel consumption of public transport, and is one of many initiatives to promote public transport, as explained by the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro.
The mayor has assured that it has met the objectives for the use of public transportation in Cartagena, as it has achieved the most significant milestone to achieve the maximum waiting time at the bus stop is 15 minutes.
Implantation "N IN LĂ NEAS 1, 4 and 7
The system was initially installed in 8 Paseo Alfonso XIII traffic lights (direction of the Plaza of Spain to the exit of the motorway).
This stretch of 1.5 kilometers cross it daily for a total of 11 buses that serve to 2,500,000 passengers a year.
The lines that have already implemented are: Line 1 (San Felix - Plaza Bastarreche), which has 4 vehicles and ride it around 669,772 passengers a year, The Line 4 (Canteras - Torreciega - Cabezo Beaza Industrial Estate) It has 3 vehicles and 525,798 passengers a year will benefit, and Line 7 (Residential Estate Bastarreche Plaza Santa Ana "), adapted from time to 70 percent, which has 4 vehicles and travel around her passengers 1,206,219 year.
The Councillor for Infrastructure, José Vicente Albaladejo, has opted for a gradual implementation of the system working with the Public Transport Authority, after reviewing the results on the Paseo Alfonso XIII.
The next leg of the pilot project will be in the Avenida Juan Carlos I in San Anton, for which they are already adapting lights, and if results are positive, the system will be extended to all bus lines and all of Carthage, Albaladejo has said.
In addition to Cartagena, the system will be implemented in other parts of geography and will affect about 40 million annual passengers using the regional bus fleet.
