Advocacy organizations in nature considered that there are no technical or scientific reasons, or even economic, to reduce the extent of the marine reserve from the 22,000 hectares of the original proposal to the 300 that are included in the draft decree.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water of the Autonomous Region of Murcia has invited different organizations to a meeting to be held in Murcia on the 24th January, to inform the draft decree on the creation of the Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest Cape Tiñoso, and whose attached map shows the disproportionate decrease in the area proposed for reservation, including only a small coastal strip overlooking the cliffs of Cape Tiñoso, and an area of 500 m radius around the Island of Las Palomas, totaling approximately 300 hectares.
The reduction of the proposed reserve in the initial studies, which largely coincided with that made by ASEAN and Greenpeace in 2006, is due, as reported by the Autonomous Community of rejection expressed by different agencies like the Port Authority of Cartagena, Maritime Authority of Cartagena, the Spanish Armada and some business sectors of the coastal municipality.
The draft decree removes the entire area as originally proposed "Conservation Priority" (submarine canyons, Cell D, nearly 20,000 hectares), almost the entire western sector of the bay of Cartagena (cell A, nearly 800 ha) , and the entire area between the cliffs of La Azohía and Isla Plana, Mazarron Bay (Cell C, 800 ha).
ANSE, WWF and Greenpeace is disappointed by the lack of agreement between the State Government and the Autonomous Community of Murcia to include in the proposal the offshore waters of greater value, such as submarine canyons located south of Cape Tiñoso and The Azohía, with important populations of marine mammals and a large fishing pressure.
The organizations believe that the ideal figure for the protection of the coastline between Cartagena and Mazarrón Bay would be a Marine Protected Area (extension from the land of Regional Park of La Muela-Cabo Tiñoso, with final approval PORN yet) including within the same reserve areas of fishery interest.
Finally, organizations are addressed in the coming days to the region and the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine to try the limits of the future Book are based on scientific and technical criteria and not only in cases interests of certain estates, which in most cases need not be incompatible with the creation of Marine Protected Area.
As demonstrated in other places such as Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, the coastal protection through marine reserves figure not only does not harm the fishermen and the local economy but also contributes to its improvement and stability.
