Local Government Board, which met this morning by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, has approved the project of restoring the staircase leading to the Sea Wall from the Paseo de Alfonso XII.
As explained Councillor for Infrastructure and Services, José Vicente Albaladejo, the project, which will soon recruitment, has a budget of around € 170,000 and a lead time of four months.
The works have the approval of the Ministry of Culture of the Autonomous Community, which has given the green light to understand that the ladder does not have any degree of protection.
Albaladejo has indicated that it is highly demanded action by the media, neighbors and even the mayor, who has sought the occasion to carry it out.
The staircase was an addition that was built around 1914 by architect Victor Beltrí to provide access to the top of the fortification from Paseo del Muelle.
Over the years and because of the weakening of its structure, was modified in the 70's and was reinforced on both sides with some railings, now removed, leaving free the bottom of the stairs and avoiding its occupation by the homeless.
In particular the works under the project consist of the following actions:
"Lifting the floor to waterproof the top surface to prevent water filtering through the tiles, then placing the same design.
- Placing new handrails, balustrades and pillars, with a similar design but with greater height, and remove the railings in the middle and upper slabs for replacement by a balustrade and pillars in accordance to the original design of Beltrí.
- Maintenance and repair of the support walls of the two intermediate slabs.
- The intermediate slabs are removed and replaced with new natural stone slabs.
- Will also be repaired beams and slabs stairs nerves need.
- Finally, a sandblast cleaning the environment occupied by the staircase.
