When Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano, probably the best jazz saxophonist of his time, met for the first time in the mid-nineties under the name of Saxophone Summit, their mission was to explore the periphery of jazz, especially through the streets paved with experimentation of saxophonist John Coltrane.
When Saxophone Summit released their debut album "Gathering of Spirits" in 2004, critics raved.
Unfortunately, with the death of Michael Brecker in early 2007, could never recorded another album with these three titans.
But in keeping with the futuristic vision and the restless spirit embodied by both Brecker and Coltrane - not only jazz but all over the musical landscape - Saxophone Summit met again for the release of "Seraphic Light", an album that continues to celebrate and explore the work of Coltrane, in this case relying on the figure of his son, Ravi, replacing the great Brecker.
Each song on this album is a journey ilimatado jazz potential.
The title "Seraphic Light" is a reference to the angels of the highest level are in the presence of God.
Like angels, the great artists come into the world and then leave too quickly for advancement to a higher plane, but their immortality lies in its ability to inspire those they leave behind.
Lovano and Liebman have been able to keep this project alive after ten years, two recordings and the loss of one of its founding members.
But the commitment to themselves and the project continues in Sax Summit.
