The City of Cartagena has been awarded the honorary award for the bet made in a long process of urban redevelopment based on the recovery of urban and architectural heritage of the city accumulated over the centuries.
Los Premios AR & PA Intervention in Heritage are the only ones made in Spain with these features and were created in 2000 with the objective of recognizing the work of professionals and institutions in the conservation, rehabilitation and restoration of cultural heritage and the interest of the projects that emphasize the application of techniques, methodologies and novel strategies for intervention in the goods.
In granting the jury praised the efforts of institutional collaboration that has allowed the recovery of their valuable and vital regeneration of the city.
Councillor for Culture, Rosario Montero, expressed his satisfaction with this new award adds to the recently granted by Europa Nostra.
Rosario recalled the dramatic transformation the city has undergone in recent years that have archaeological value through the consortium Cartagena Port of Cultures and the Foundation of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena.
He also stressed the rehabilitation of a hundred fronts, with an investment of some 6.1 million euros, and the most important pedestrian streets of the Old Town and its opening to the sea.
In awarding the prize has been a burden on the host Cartagena National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, a pioneer museum proposal in which new technologies are combined with an interactive and accessible collections.
OTHER AWARDS AR & PA 2010
Next to Cartagena have been awarded in this edition of the awards, given by the Junta de Castilla y León, the restoration of the Monastery of Santa Clara Velha in Coimbra in the international section, the design and construction of rehabilitation of the old convent of St. Thomas in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) for use as a Parador Nacional de Turismo, at the national level, the City Council and neighbors in Ávila Gotarrendura, at the regional level, and Javier Cortes filántopo Ă lvarez de Miranda, posthumously.
The awards ceremony will take place at the close of the International Congress of Cultural Heritage Economics, part of the Seventh Biennial Heritage Restoration and Management, AR & PA 2010, to be held in Valladolid from 11 to 14 November.
