Two hundred neighbors cartageneras Alumbres council have spoken today at 11 am in front of the entrance to the company - BEFESA in tailings to protest against the proposed installation in the company of an incinerator of hazardous waste that is pending.
Protesters have also benefited from the support and assistance of Ecologists in Action and neighborhood groups of the neighboring town of La Union.
The protesters carried placards that read "No to incineration" and "For our health."
To neighbors and environmentalists to install a regular incineration plant toxic and dangerous would be a serious and significant environmental impact and public health for several reasons First, the burning of such waste to behave the issuance of the atmosphere of pollutants to be added to the already deteriorating air quality in the area of Alum Valley tailings, increasing air pollution in the area.
Also these pollutants, emissions result from burning of waste, are toxic to public health especially the potentially carcinogenic, among which are the so-called dioxins and furans.
Finally, the installation of this plant will increase incineration of toxic and hazardous tailings reached from other regions with laws more restrictive controllers and the consequent danger of the transfer and manipulation.
Neighbors sue environmentalists and regional authorities do not give permission to the plant and environmental criteria is crucial is that the waste is treated and recycled se4 and the place they occur.
Neighbors and environmentalists continue with actions and demonstrations until I managed to stop the project.
