The simulation of an earthquake that began early this morning in the municipality of Cartagena has highlighted the coordinated action of all municipal services in the face of a catastrophe of this type, as highlighted by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, who has coordinated to the different heads of service from CECOPAL, installed in the facilities of the Security Park.
The councilors of Citizen Security, Francisco Aznar, followed the first hours of the day;
of Public Services, Juan Pedro Torralba;
and of Quality of Life and Wellbeing, Obdulia Gómez, and it has been possible to verify, according to Castejón, the level of preparation and reaction of the more than 120 public employees who have participated.
Since about half past eight in the morning, the single emergency number 112 reported the event with a magnitude of 5.7 degrees and whose epicenter was located in Cabo Palos, the Municipal Emergency Plan was activated and the first incidents, such as a chemical escape in Alumbres and the collapse of several buildings with victims in the Concepción neighborhood.
The structure of the Santa Lucía Hospital also collapsed with fire in a kitchen and there was a rescue by the Fire Department of two people trapped in the rubble, and the canine unit of Civil Protection also participated.
Meanwhile, in Alumbres the population was confined to their homes and they were given advice through the exterior public address system and later they were evacuated in buses to the Sports Palace of Cartagena.
There were also older people and people with reduced mobility of Alumbres and Vista Alegre.
Before Infrastructures and Sports officials had verified that the installation was in good condition.
Equally personnel of Social Services and the Red Cross took the filiation and attended the health incidents that some of the evacuees presented.
Other incidents that were answered in the morning especially by Fire and Civil Protection were a train with 14 cisterns blocked in Escombreras;
another gas leak in the Polígono de Cabezo Beaza treatment plant;
the rupture of the natural gas line in Escombreras that activated the Special Plan for the Civil Protection of Dangerous Goods TRANSMUR;
and a chemical threat that forced to confine the students of the Hespérides Institute of Santa Lucía.
The Local Police was in turn giving information of the situation that was occurring in its deployment, focused on the accompaniment of the different emergency devices and checking the situation of the notices that arrived as the breakage of a water tank in The Azohía.
While in the Administrative Building of San Miguel centralized the group of damage assessment of Urbanism and Infrastructures and used for it the viewing in a macro wall of the multiple surveillance cameras that are located in the main avenues and streets of the city, and through inspection visits to homes, which included the personnel of the Archaeological Museum and technicians from the Autonomous Community to the listed buildings and sites.
