The cloisters of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have given their majority support today to move forward with the plan of restructuring of departments that began at the end of 2016. Almost 70% of Claustro members, the highest representative body of the university community, has voted in favor of the reform.
In the UPCT there are currently 25 departments.
The objective approved in the Government Council in 2017 is to reduce them to at least 15. The main goal is the improvement of the teaching quality.
The extraordinary session of the Senate has been convened at the request of 98 claustrales to discuss the process of departmental restructuring.
After the debate and voting, the members of the Senate believe that the process should go forward.
This plan translates into a redistribution of human resources to adapt them to current needs.
Among the objectives of the reform mentioned by the Rector, Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, is to encourage teachers to improve teaching quality, promote teaching in English and online and the promotion of the UPCT, "all this within a process of global and continuous reform of the institution ".
The Rector stressed that the restructuring will improve administrative and technical services to teachers, by reallocating them more appropriate to real needs.
He has also indicated that the plan will promote a more equitable distribution of activity among the administration and services staff of the departments.
"The use of these resources in support of the centers will result in an improvement of the teaching quality", said Díaz Morcillo.
