An architect of the UPCT creates a craft center to revitalize the Monte Sacro (14/04/2018)

Revitalize the Monte Sacro area with a craft center.

That is the proposal that the architect from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), María José Alcaraz, has raised in her Final Degree Project.

The work, directed by the UPCT professor Juan Pedro Sanz, is part of the CTracción Project, which arose as a result of a collaboration agreement made by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena with the City of Cartagena, which consists of the integration of the university and research with the company through the creation of spaces, equipment and services that are attractive to social life and the business world.

The area of intervention on which the architect has focused corresponds to the Barrio de Emprendedores de Cartagena, located in the area of Monte Sacro.

"I chose to focus my work on a craft center because the city is closely linked to this," the young woman explained, after studying the cultural facilities in Cartagena and comparing them with Murcia.

According to it, in Cartagena there are more than 100 registered artisans, so it intends to provide the city with a creation center linked to handicrafts and that would complement the premises that already exists for sale and exhibition, dependent on the Autonomous Community, as well as the Glass Museum.

Alcaraz adds that the environment in which the work is carried out is a neighborhood of the old town of Cartagena, "characterized by neglect, the poor state of the area, and sometimes, insecurity, despite its proximity to the campus of the university, centers of affluence of the city ", reason why it considers that a center of crafts in this place would give foot to a" progressive filling "of the zone, integrating it in the urban life.

He calculates that to carry out this project he would need 7,200 square meters.

It proposes that the building in which the center would be located, would have several floors and in the center of each of them would be placed artisan workshops with stained glass windows so that visitors could see what they are working on.
