The long-awaited permanent headquarters of the International University of the Sea is already a reality.
The city of Cartagena gives the institution a municipal space, to house them throughout the year, and thus can carry out activities and courses on a permanent basis.
The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the acting rector of the University of Murcia (UMU), José Orihuela, signed on Thursday, April 12, the protocol by him that this cession of municipal spaces becomes effective to locate the permanent headquarters.
The chosen place is the Quarry Resource Center.
Ana Belén Castejón said, at the end of the meeting with the rector of the UMU, that this signature culminates a claim and a need many years ago.
The mayor explained the two options that the session had before this claim, "keep looking and dreaming of the site that deserves the University the Sea, an emblematic site where the environment will accompany the headquarters" or the second, which is the one has finally made, "search among the existing municipal facilities the most suitable to offer to the Universidad del Mar".
The selection of the Quarry Resource Center has finally been made by considering, from the Cartagena Consistory, that despite not being by the sea had a "pleasant environmental environment."
In addition, being a center with a lot of training activity, since it also taught courses of the Local Agency for Development and Employment (ADLE), or activities scheduled by the Department of Youth.
The new permanent headquarters has been paired in Cartagena to develop more activities, but the acting president of the UMU.
José Orihuela, wanted to clarify that this does not mean that activities that are now being done in other municipalities are removed, but that new activities will be created, "these new activities will have to be developed and planned well, to know where they are going".
In this regard, Orihuela has expressed its project to create a network of universities in the Mediterranean, with four or five universities linked to the International University of the Sea to offer students courses that give them a comprehensive education.
Finally Orihuela, has stated his assurance that with the new permanent headquarters, Universidad Internacional del Mar will become the second best university in Spain organizing courses, "we will not be able to displace the first one that is Menéndez Pelayo, but I am sure that we will be second, surpassing the one of the Escorial ", has concluded the rector of the UMU.
