Lavatorio de Pilatos will be staged again at the Town Hall (27/03/2018)

The facade of the Consistorial Palace will once again be the scene of the representation of the biblical passages of the judgment and condemnation of Jesus that culminate in the washing of the praetor Pontius Pilate.

This recreation will take place tomorrow, March 28, Holy Wednesday day at 5:45 p.m.

The Department of Celebrations, which has been organizing this representation since its inception more than 40 years ago will place about 500 chairs in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

This activity is possible thanks to the collaboration of the California group of Roman Soldiers and the work of non-professional actors coordinated by the director of the municipal theater school, Alfredo Sánchez.

Lavatorio de Pilatos is one of the characteristic acts of Holy Week in Cartagena.

We have news of its celebration for more than a century.

In principle it consisted of reading a parchment in which they exculpated themselves from the death of Christ and washed their hands, after which the water, which used to carry some cologne, was thrown to the public.

The act lasted approximately five minutes.

In its beginnings, it was developed on the Correos staircase, later to be made on the façade of the City Hall, Torres Park, Artillery Park and Plaza de San Francisco.

Since 2007 it has been carried out on the main façade of the Town Hall, after being rehabilitated that same year.

Since 1975 the act changed radically, giving it a scenic shape like a sacramental car that lasts about 30 minutes.
