MC will require the municipal government to carry out the necessary procedures to guard and expose the furniture of the nineteenth century pharmacy of the Peña Ros family (23/02/2018)

The MC Cartagena municipal group will require, during the next Plenary, that the local government, and specifically its current councilor in the area of Education, Culture and Youth, to carry out the necessary procedures to acquire, guard and exhibit the furniture of the century pharmacy XIX that was located in the main street, belonging to the Peña Ros family.

The proposal will be presented by Councilman Ricardo Segado, who has ensured that with this measure "we intend that this heritage stays in Cartagena, as other entities such as the University of Murcia have shown interest in acquiring it."

In this regard, the mayor has indicated that "we request the Government to meet urgently with the Peña Ros family to reach a donation agreement."

Search for solutions

Last year 2017, the Peña Ros family transferred the ownership of the pharmacy that is currently located on Avenida Reina Victoria and which, to this day, preserves the furniture of the period in its back room, waiting to be exhibited and placed in value for the enjoyment of all Cartagena and tourists who come looking for history in our city.

In this way, the Department of Historical Heritage, managed by MC Cartagena until the cessation of municipal government, has been making efforts to find solutions "with the intention of reaching an agreement with the family and find a suitable place for such furniture , currently untapped and hidden in the eyes of our culture. "

'Long' socialist government to the family

The Peña Ros family requested in writing on December 27, 2017, by means of a request for transfer of this heritage, valued at 250,000 euros, that the City Council undertake to guard and receive the furniture through donations to exhibit it permanently in a municipal space.

Subsequently, on February 8, 2018, the family received communication from the municipal heritage service, informing that the City Council had no obligation to accept said furniture, thus showing the true intentions of the current local Executive.

In this regard, Ricardo Segado stressed that "there is no legal obligation, but a moral obligation to our heritage and our past, something that matters little to the socialist municipal government, as has been demonstrated."

Epicenter of the political and artistic flow of the city in the 19th century

On the other hand, the councilor of MC Cartagena has reminded, for the sake of the municipal government know the importance of these assets, that the plot in which was the pharmacy in the main street was located previously the convent of Santo Domingo.

This plot was acquired by Benito Pico, who built an apothecary for his son Eduardo Pico y Bres, PhD in Pharmacy from the Central University of Madrid.

Thus, due to the restless character of Eduardo Pico, the rebound became the epicenter of the political and artistic flow of the city, as the painter Manuel Wsell de Guimbarda.

Also, from the pharmacy came the components of the Revolutionary Junta that exercised authority after the triumph of the 1868 Revolution, which ended with the dethronement and exile of Isabel II and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy.

Already during the first half of the 20th century, Agustín Malo de Molina y Pico would rent it to Agustín Merck, while in 1932 it would pass to Manuel Malo de Molina.

After the death of this one, in 1971, the pharmacy passed, for a short time, to the widow of Malo de Molina.

The last owner was María Dolores Ros.
