MC demands that the finding of Baluarte No. 3 and part of the wall of Carlos III be documented in order to assign them the appropriate protection measures (22/02/2018)

MC Cartagena has transferred, through its secretary general, José López, two communications sent to the general director of Cultural Property of the CARM, Juan Antonio Lorca, and Ana Belén Castejón, in order to document the discovery of part of the wall of Carlos III and Baluarte n ° 3, which have been found in the site located at the confluence between Carlos III, Juan Fernández and San Juan streets, in front of the Santa Florentina Market of Cartagena.

The Cartagena-based training has required the Directorate General of Cultural Assets to make an urgent inspection visit to the aforementioned site, guaranteeing that the discovery is documented in its entirety prior to the granting of any construction license.

Thus, José López said, "the knowledge and enjoyment of future generations will be made possible by assigning them an environment and adequate protection measures".

In addition, Lopez will urge Castejón to inform the General Directorate of Cultural Property, on behalf of the City of Cartagena, of the aforementioned patrimony.

Wall of Carlos III

The remains of Baluarte n ° 3 and part of the wall of Carlos III do not need a new procedure that ends with its declaration of Cultural Interest since the wall of Carlos III has this recognition included in the national heritage legislation and regional level, as well as in the General Urban Plan of Cartagena.

It is, in this case, "the appearance of a new section of the wall and previously documented," said the general secretary of MC.

López added that "given that they have appeared on a site where the construction of a residential building is planned, it is essential to assign an environment of protection to the BIC that respects its historical and monumental importance".

It is worth remembering that the Wall of Carlos III, an Asset of Cultural Interest, was made by the military engineer Mateo Vodopich.

It has its beginning in the Galeras Castle and surrounded the entire old city of Cartagena allowing access to it through three monumental doors: those of Madrid, San José and Santa Catalina.
