The Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena will host this year an international meeting on the architecture of these scenic spaces (18/02/2018)

The Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena, whose patronage is integrated by the Community, the City Council and the Cajamurcia Foundation, organizes in collaboration with the University of Murcia the international symposium 'La porticus post scaenam in the Roman theatrical architecture', for which the registration period is open.

The congress on the porticos of the Roman theaters will take place on October 19 and 20 and with it the continuity of the already celebrated on the theoretical design of the scenic facades (its modulation, architectural evolution and peculiarities) is given.

On this occasion, the aim is to focus attention on a less studied space of Roman theaters such as 'la porticus post scaenam'.

The General Director of Cultural Assets and member of the board, Juan Antonio Lorca, declared that "in addition to the work of conservation and enhancement of the monument and its collection, we must highlight in the history of this museum its great work of cultural diffusion and educational, through temporary exhibitions, visits and workshops, as well as scientific dissemination, which also continues to grow thanks to congresses and symposia such as the one that will be held in October and that will bring together some of the greatest international experts in Roman theater architecture ".

The Roman Theater Studies Center manages these activities and also looks after the researchers and the documentation control.

As remembered Lorca, "the twenty years of archaeological intervention on the monument and its surroundings, plus the five years of restoration and architectural performance that have made Cartagena an example of heritage recovery, have generated an extraordinary volume of information that is within reach of the citizens".

The activities organized during 2017 in the Roman Theater have allowed to increase the number of users of the services of the museum by 63 percent;

a significant increase that adds to the number of visitors, since its figure also continued to grow during 2017 until it reached 220,000 people, surpassing already one and a half million since its opening in July 2008. Currently, in fact, "the of the Roman Theater of Cartagena is the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia and one of the most important in Spain, "said the head of Cultural Heritage.

Analysis of the porticos

If we pay attention to classical sources, the porticos of the Roman theaters play a role both as protection for the spectators in case of inclement weather and for the preparations of the actors, passing also for its use as an area of expansion and recreation.

They were also suitable spaces for the self-representation of the local elites and appear often associated with those theaters where the intervention of the imperial family was closer, as was the case in Cartagena, Mérida or Volterra (Italy), some of the places which will be analyzed in the congress.

In other theaters, the space is reduced to a small porticoed gallery, as in Duga (Tunisia) or Leptis Magna (Libya).

Through the presentations that will be given in Cartagena will offer a global vision on the restoration and enhancement of these spaces that will serve as a framework for discussion for the future proposal of the Portico of the Roman Theater of Cartagena, as, as it progressed Lorca, "in this 2018, European Year of Cultural Heritage, will undertake the project of intervention, research and adaptation of the portico behind the scene, a landscaped space whose recovery will complete the journey."

The inscriptions for the symposium can be made already in the congress secretariat, in the Roman Theater of Cartagena (telephone 968 504 802 / mail: fundación@teatroromanocartagena.org).

The tuition price ranges between 20 and 70 euros and ten scholarships will be awarded.
