The Area of ​​Culture and Heritage, directed by the councilman Ricardo Segado, has proceeded during these days to remove vegetation that masked much of the walls of the known as bastion 24 on the land front of the Wall of Carlos III, located in the surroundings of the old Club Santiago and the Plaza del Maestro Torres Escribano.
The performance has had the archaeological monitoring carried out by Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, with the aim of recovering the fortified image of this bastion, which surrounds the northern slope of the hill of San José and which offered a poor state of conservation due to the vegetation I covered it.
The general director of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mª Carmen Berrocal, explained that the bastion, of pentagonal plant, had both in its upper and lower sections a dense vegetation, formed mainly by ivy vines, cypresses hedges and clumps of coarse plants that adorned the Santiago Club.
This circumstance, together with the planting of different arboreal species, the landscaped areas of Capitanes Ripoll and Pedro Martín Zermeño streets, had caused the complete hiding of this element of the wall.
The works have been authorized by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and have been coordinated by Berrocal.
They have lasted two weeks and from them the original wall has been identified, as well as the recent re-growth.
These works have allowed to evaluate the negative visual impact of the nearest trees and have the information to write an integral project that contemplates the visualization and illumination of the bastion from the streets adjacent to Capitanes Ripoll with the intention of recovering a significant section for the city of this Property of Cultural Interest disappeared practically on the land front.
