National award to a thesis of the UPCT that uses artificial intelligence to detect problems in the engines of ships (03/01/2018)

The use of artificial intelligence to detect problems in the engines of ships has served the doctor by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) José Antonio Pagán to get the biannual award for the best thesis Ph.D.

Thesis Award of the AEM of 2017, granted by the Spanish Maintenance Association (AEM).

Pagán has demonstrated with his doctoral thesis 'Marine diesel engine diagnostic system based on thermodynamic model and artificial intelligence' the reliability of incorporating hybrid system based on artificial intelligence and a database of failures to diesel engines of ships for detect problems before the failure is serious enough.

The jury of the Spanish Maintenance Association has highlighted "the high technical level and quality of the works presented, reflecting the rigor, seriousness and dedication of authors and directors in them".

For this reason, he has transmitted to the director of the thesis, Francisco Vera of the Thermal Machines and Motors area, that "it has been very difficult for the jury of the award to take a unanimous decision to award the final prize".

José Antonio Pagán studied Industrial Engineering at the UPCT.

He currently works professionally in the field of Maintenance Engineering and works in the Navantia factory in Cartagena, where he is responsible for the development of Argo 21, a new intelligent maintenance product, consisting of a software platform to predict ship failures. built by Navantia.
