The first deputy mayor and councilor of the Culture and Heritage area, Ricardo Segado (MC Cartagena), together with the municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mari Carmen Berrocal, and after consulting the city's official chroniclers, has drawn up a proposal consisting of establishing 2018 be declared the year of Romanticism and Constitutionalism.

This proposal, which has been submitted to the Mayor's Office for approval, is motivated by the fact that this name includes the main features of 19th-century Spanish history, with cultural and political aspects that have a direct impact both in the municipality and in Spain.

For Segado "who appears as a star in this era is the Cartagena actor, Isidoro Máiquez, who celebrated the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2018. Also, the nineteenth is the era of revolutionary movements, where Cartagena actively takes part , highlighting its role in the Cantonal Revolution ".

Also, the mayor recalled that it is the period of "the Romantics like Monroy and the constitutional town councils of our municipal area, such as Alumbres, Pozo Estrecho, El Algar or Santa Lucia."

A thematic year

Nonetheless, Ricardo Segado recalled that in the last two years a successful cultural proposal of a general nature has been established, promoted by the City Council of Cartagena, consisting in developing in the municipality a thematic year at historical level that has as reference a relevant episode of the History of our City.

In this way, 2016 was the year Modernism (early twentieth century) and 2017 that of the Enlightenment (eighteenth century).

The social repercussion of these initiatives has been very positive, since all the cultural referents of Cartagena act within the same thematic scope but from different considerations, obtaining a very favorable synergy to the development of a multitude of activities, among which courses are included, visits, conferences, exhibitions, competitions, painting and photography activities or costumes, among other events.

In addition, there is a direct involvement of the public universities of the Region (UPCT, UMU and UNED), as well as the different Museums of Cartagena and all cultural and sports associations.

Without forgetting that from the City Council participate the different services of the councils of Culture, Heritage, Education and Sports, with a prominent role of the Municipal Archive and the Municipal Archaeological Museum.
