After several weeks of work, the cleaning project of the Atalaya Castle, promoted by the Sustainable Development area in collaboration with the Department of Archaeological Heritage, has been completed.
The works consisted in conditioning the fortress accesses by clearing them of vegetation, and removing debris and rubbish from them.
They have also proceeded to the identification of architectural elements displaced from their original positions.
This initial phase of intervention in the Atalaya Castle has involved the recovery of 200 meters of original road and the preparation of the lower sections of the same, for future restoration work.
The archaeological follow-up of the project has been carried out by the historian and archaeologist, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán;
with the advice of the Coordinator of Archaeological Heritage, Mª Carmen Berrocal.
The cleanliness of the covered road, the dry moat, the guard corps, the four great bastions, the central esplanade with the tanks and large areas with original paving, has allowed to graphically document the original constructive characteristics of this magnificent 18th century construction.
In these works, it has been possible to collect information that is decisive for the future restoration project.
The works have ended with the closing of the main access door, to prevent access to the interior, and thus stop the deterioration of the building.
