The UPCT participates in the study of one of the most productive ecosystems in the world (28/12/2017)

The researcher of the area of External Geodynamics of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Marisol Manzano participates in the project of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Dominican Republic on the hydrogeology of the National Park Humedales del Ozama, one of the most important ecosystems productive of the world, located next to Santo Domingo, capital of the Caribbean country.

The project led by the National Geological Service (SGN) of the Dominican Republic is the first of its kind in the country, and one of the first worldwide, since there are no studies that consider the relationship of these wetlands and the relationship of these with groundwater and their hydrological functioning.

"We want to know the hydrological functioning of these wetlands and the role played by groundwater, assessing their contribution to the ecosystem services of wetlands in order to establish scientific bases for the preservation and management of both these ecosystems and aquifers ", Explains the researcher, member of the group Management, Use and Recovery of Soils and Water (GARSA), of the UPCT.

The project, directed by Engineer Yenny Rodríguez, of the SGN, addresses the first study on groundwater and the hydrological functioning of the National Park Humedales del Ozama, in the eastern coastal plain of the Caribbean country.

Wetlands provide services that are fundamental to human health and well-being, such as the production of food and raw materials, water purification, flood control, replenishment of groundwater and many others, according to the researcher.

However, "despite the benefits they generate, they are one of the most stressed ecosystems in the world," says Professor Manzano, from the Department of Mining, Geology and Cartography.

The research is carried out with the help of the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology through the National Fund for Innovation and Scientific and Technological Development (FONDOCyT).

In this project also participates the researcher of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain Jorge Homero.

Professor Manzano also participates in the European project "Nature Insurance value: Assessment and Demonstration" that aims to demonstrate the value of ecosystems to reduce the human and economic cost of the risks associated with floods and droughts.
