The Civil Guard seizes thousands of archaeological pieces, weapons, ammunition and objects protected by the CITES agreement (22/12/2017)

A person has been arrested as an alleged perpetrator of the crimes of misappropriation, reception, illegal possession of weapons, ammunition deposit and crime related to the protection of flora and fauna

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has developed the operation 'FALCATA', an investigation initiated last September and framed in the 'Plan for the defense of the Spanish Historical Heritage', which has resulted in the arrest of a person like presumed author of the crimes of misappropriation, reception, illegal possession of weapons, ammunition deposit and crime related to the protection of flora and fauna.

In an industrial building in Cartagena, the Benemérita has seized more than 2,000 objects, among which are 1,400 ancient coins, ceramic, metal and stone objects of archaeological value, 88 pieces of ivory protected by CITES Convention, and 39 weapons. and abundant ammunition.

The investigation began last September when SEPRONA agents investigated, through the Internet, the purchase and sale of objects of historical value, protected by the Law of Historical Heritage of the Region.

These investigations allowed to identify a person, settled in Cartagena, who allegedly is dedicated to the sale of old objects through the Internet in the Region.

The different surveillance devices established on the suspect allowed his arrest in flagrante delicto, since he was surprised while he was selling the pieces made in supposedly ivory, without the corresponding CITES documentation proving his legal possession.

The detainee was seized the size of a Christ allegedly made in ivory, which was intended to be sold for about 6,000 euros, which is attributed an alleged offense relating to the protection of flora and fauna.

This first intervention put the Benemérita behind the track of an industrial building in Cartagena, where the detainee maintained some activity, for which the corresponding entry and registration order was requested.

Recently, investigators have inspected the property and found 1,400 coins from the Roman and Muslim eras, numerous pieces of pottery, metal and stone of archaeological value, ivory carvings, 39 weapons (fire and white) and a large amount of ammunition .

Of the total of weapons intervened, some of them are useless, there are weapons of war, revolvers and pistols, as well as knives.

Some of them are considered historical weapons, such as rifles and muzzleloaders, sabers, swords and catanas, as well as a crossbow.

Therefore, the Civil Guard has arrested its owner as alleged perpetrator of the crimes of misappropriation, reception, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition deposit.

The Benemérita has counted with the collaboration specialists of the Historical Heritage Service of the Region and the Tax Agency.

The pieces of archaeological value seized coins, amphoras, amulets, fibulae and other pieces of stone have been deposited in the Archaeological Museum of Cartagena, the objects of alleged ivory in the regional offices of Customs and Special Taxes of Murcia and weapons and ammunition in the Weapons Intervention of the 5th Zone of the Civil Guard in Murcia, all available to the judicial authority.

The arrested, the effects intervened and the proceedings ordered have been made available to the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Mula (Murcia).
