The first deputy mayor and councilor of Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, visited this morning the archaeological performance that is being developed in the Wall of Felipe V, in front of the Artillery Park.
Segado has been accompanied by the councilor of the Government, José López;
the municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mari Carmen Berrocal;
the general coordinator of Sustainable Development, Jesús Giménez, and the archaeologist and historian, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán.
The councilor has indicated that the reason for his visit was to "know the work that is being carried out in the Wall of Felipe V as a continuation of the action initiated at the end of 2015 and early 2016, with José López as mayor of Cartagena and with which it is tried to discover the layout of this this wall of 1721 ".
In the same way, it has advanced that "in 2018 a series of surveys will be carried out to continue delimiting where this wall of Felipe V passes until it reaches the structure of the building of Muralla de Tierra Street," adding that "the next year we are going to undertake the cleaning and the realization of the project of musealization of the refuges of the Civil War, being one of its exits, of the three existing ones, inside the Wall ".
The present archaeological intervention gives continuity to the one initiated at the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, under the coordination of the then General Director of Infrastructures, Manuel Nicolás.
Previously, only the vertex of the Wall was known, in front of the Artillery Park.
Once the relevant demolitions were made, it was found that the Wall had a continuation and that it had not been dismantled in previous times.
In the works that are being developed at present, remains of structures from the 1920s are being removed, which were attached to the wall, so that the original section of the fortification, made of irregular stone, is visible.
This section corresponds to the rock of the Wall worked in vertical, evidencing that in Cartagena always has adapted the ancient topography in terms of the defense of the city.
After this, it remains to know the existing stretch between the beginning of the rise Wall of Earth and the one that is under the structure of the building built on the Wall years ago.
Of the intermediate section, the plans are conserved, and archeological surveys are planned to document the route of the wall, which will allow, according to Mari Carmen Berrocal, "a splendid interior front with very high elevations. important. "
The performance in the Wall of Felipe V is one of the eleven announced last October by the Archaeological Heritage area to continue with the recovery and enhancement of the main assets of Cartagena, which will mean a global investment of some one hundred thousand euros.
