The Commission of Valuation of the 2017 Voluntary Commitment Award met yesterday to fail, for the ninth consecutive year, the awards in the individual and legal or collective modality, awards that represent a recognition of the voluntary action organized Cartagena, in particular to its main actors : volunteers and voluntary organizations.
The Commission, which was chaired by the councilor of Quality of Life Area, Francisco Calderón Sánchez, along with the mayor of Social Services, Carmen Martín del Amor, and technicians from the different Councils, determined that, in this edition, the individual prize has fallen to Mª Jesús Achega Jaúregui, volunteer for more than a decade in the Colectivo La Huertecica.
Its integration in the volunteering of this entity has been a great support to people who suffer exclusion, providing them with tools to overcome it, from their personal involvement and through social awareness and from the denunciation of the conditions that produce exclusion and supporting the struggle for them to disappear.
With the same commitment and dedication, Mª Jesús has cooperated in the solidarity movement of the city, actively participating in favor of the most vulnerable people, as president of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations, from the Carmen Conde Collective, Social Forum, as well as in other entities of great social importance in the municipality, always on the side of the weakest.
In the juridical or collective modality the prize has fallen to the Volunteer Project of the Food Bank of the Region of Murcia, NGO if profit motive dedicated to the distribution of staple foods to the most underprivileged sectors of the population.
In Cartagena it distributes food to 64 social entities, serving the basic needs of 20,195 beneficiaries, and 1,320 children under 2 years of age.
The commission unanimously decided to carry out a posthumous recognition of the important work carried out by Alfonso Torres Carretero at the head of this entity.
This award is one of the actions framed in the Municipal Volunteer Program of the City of Cartagena, which is managed by the Department of Social Services and Social Mediation, with the participation of the councils of Youth, Equality, Education, Culture and Sports.
The awards ceremony will take place on December 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cartagena Cultural Center of the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation of the Mayor Street.
