Speaking of birds compiles the oral tradition about the birds of the Region of Murcia (13/11/2017)

'Speaking of birds' is the first compilation of oral tradition of the Region of Murcia related to birds.

The book will be presented at the Assembly Hall of the Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena, on Friday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m.

The work of Gregorio Rabal offers the reader the possibility of knowing much of that oral tradition of the Region of Murcia, both the specific lexicon, folklore samples of different signs, customs and beliefs of remote origin.

All this is mixed by the pages of this book to record the rich relationship that has existed centuries between man and birds.

The writer will be accompanied in the act of presentation, Anselmo José Sánchez Ferra, great researcher and student of the folk tales of this Region for thirty years, he has published the repertoires of Torre Pacheco, Cartagena and Lorca in the Murcian Journal of Anthropology, and about twenty articles on the subject.

Anselmo is in charge, together with Antonio Vidal, to make the introduction to the book.

The book is illustrated by the painter and engraver, Antonio Vidal Maíquez, who has made the twenty-seven illustrations following the indications of the author, Gregorio Rabal.

Behind the illustrations there are countless encounters with the author in which he needed details about the identifying characteristics of each of the species reproduced and their habitat.

With his pencils, inks and watercolors, this work constitutes a magnificent result between tradition and artistic inspiration.

GREGORIO RABAL SAURA

In the last twenty-three years, Gregorio Rabal Saura (Cartagena, 1961) has directed his interest and research curiosity towards some plots of Murcian oral tradition such as ethnobotany, popular meteorology or popular zoology.

The result of his wanderings through the regional territory after the remains of our traditional culture, has allowed him to collect an important wealth of ethnographic information, whose analysis and study is reflected in the publication of multiple works.

This compilation work is now materialized in a book that interspersed ornithology, ethnography, literature, lexicography and folklore, accompanied by an extraordinary set of illustrations that put an image to some of the most emblematic and representative species of our winged fauna .

'Speaking of birds' is presented in the auditorium of the Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena, on November 17 at 8.00 pm.
