The Community creates six new population centers of Jara de Cartagena, a species in critical danger of extinction (13/11/2017)

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment expects to have at the end of this year with six new population centers of 'Cistus heterophyllus subspecies Carthaginensis' (jara de Cartagena) which, together with those already existing, will add a population of more than 350 individuals in the area of application of the recovery plan of this species, declared in a critical situation of danger of extinction.

The General Director of Medio Medio, Consuelo Rosauro, visited this morning different works that are being carried out in mountains of the zone of the deputation of Llano de Beal in Cartagena in which this plant is reintroduced as part of the work of the approval of the Recovery Plan of the jara de Cartagena launched three years ago.

The General Directorate of Natural Environment is carrying out different conservation actions in the so-called 'critical area' of the species, among which are the conservation work of its habitat, the introduction of new individuals and the enclosure of the natural population as protection against to herbivores and human action.

These works are carried out within the framework of the project 'Actions of the recovery plans of Erica arborea and Cistus heterophyllus subspecies Carthaginensis', financed by the Operational Program Feder Región de Murcia 2014-2020, which also includes actions for the conservation of heather white, another threatened species in the Region.

On the other hand, the actions foreseen in the project 'Actions for the recovery and conservation of the endangered species of rose hipper of Cartagena (Cistus heterophyllus subsp. Carthaginensis)' are being carried out simultaneously and coordinated. technical and financial support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and co-financing from the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment.

One of the main actions of this project is the creation of new population nuclei of the species for what is being done these days the plantations that will significantly expand the population of the species.

Note the participation of numerous volunteers who have collaborated in the two days of planting that have taken place in recent weeks.

"As a result of these projects being carried out, it is expected that by the end of the year the creation of the new nuclei of the species will be achieved, which together with the existing ones will add a total population of more than 350 individuals in the area of application of the plan. of recovery, "said the general director of Medio Medio.

To these reintroductions, we must add the plants that are naturally found in the wild population, which seems to show signs of recovery in recent years.

Although the decline of adult individuals in this population rediscovered in 1993 has been confirmed, "their evolution is encouraging since since the approval of the plan until the present time, more than 60 new plants have been recruited, which although still are juveniles, have already overcome, during one or two years, the critical period of mortality that takes place in summer ", clarified Consuelo Rosauro.

Jara of Cartagena

The jara de Cartagena is one of the most endangered flora species of the European continent, which led to its inclusion in the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species in the category 'in danger of extinction'.

The delicate situation of this plant, which only has four adult individuals in the natural environment in the Iberian Peninsula, caused that on July 24 the Sectoral Conference on Environment agreed its declaration as a species 'in critical situation'.

This declaration, which is pending final approval after a period of public information, will imply that the works and projects aimed at the recovery of the species are considered to be of general interest and their processing is of an urgent nature.
