"Divan of contemporary Arab poetesses" (Editions of the east and the Mediterranean, 2016) is the book that will be presented this Tuesday, November 7, at 6:00 p.m., in the auditorium of the Roman Theater Museum, within the festival "Deslinde" of poetry organized by the Department of Culture of the City of Cartagena, an event in which the author of the anthology, Jaafar Al Alun, will be present in the company of the poet José Antonio Martínez Muñoz.
The process of incorporation into contemporary Arab poetry, in particular, and the societies of these countries, in general, has not been easy nor, surely, even close to being concluded.
This anthology aims to highlight the importance of a poetic trajectory that began in the mid-twentieth century, through ten poetesses: Fadwa Tuqán, Názik Al-Malaika, Lamía Abbás Amara, Saniya Saleh, Suad Al-Sabah, Fawzía Abú Jáled, Ámal Yarrah, Huda Ali Iblán, Suzanne Alaywan and Widad Benmusa.
The work, published by Ediciones del Oriente and the Mediterranean, has a prologue by Adonis, written especially for this edition.
"Following a chronological order, the anthology begins with the poets who set in motion the feminine poetic movement and who, at the same time, introduced changes in the poetic tradition from the fifties: Názik Al-Malaika and Fadwa Tuqán.
The sixties meant the entrance of poetic modernity through the Sh'ir magazine and I opted for Saniya Saleh and his contemporary Ámal Yarrah.
The theme of the freedom of women and their role in Arab society was expressed in the seventies and eighties through three poets: Lamía Abbás Amara, Suad Al-Sabah and Fawzía Abú Jáled.
And to finish with the nineties of the last century, I wanted to reflect the poetic map of the entire Arab world, choosing from the oriental countries, the Lebanese Suzanne Alaywan;
from the West, to the Moroccan Widad Benmusa and from the Gulf countries, to the Yemeni Huda Iblán. "
Syrian poet and translator Jaafar Al Aluni
The Syrian poet and translator Jaafar Al Aluni has published this bilingual anthology in which he intends to introduce the Spanish-speaking reader in the knowledge of the always difficult role that the Arab woman has played and plays in the evolution of society and poetry.
Jaafar Aluni (Damascus 1989), graduated in Spanish Philology from the University of Damascus, Master in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Alcalá de Henares.
Translator and journalist.
His work as curator of cultural exhibitions is long.
He was director of the book forums in the Ministry of Culture of Syria during 2012-2016.
He is a translator of several books of Spanish literature into Arabic, including: The dehumanization of art by J. Ortega y Gasset (2012), Spanish literature of the twentieth century (2013), Niebla, Miguel de Unamuno (2014), Don Quixote de la Mancha, children's version (2014), Rimas, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (2014), etc.
Participation of Arab women
In the act you can hear the reading of some of these poems in bilingual and women's voices.
This year coincides with the centenary of the birth of the first of these women, the Palestinian Fadwa Tuqán.
The event has the collaboration of the Roman Theater Foundation and the Department of Social Services, which has made it possible for a significant number of Arab women to participate in it.
A group of these women will read the selected poems in their original language, which will also be read later in Spanish by Spanish-language poets.
Attendance is free until full capacity is reached.
